After Thriller Bark, the Straw Hats go to the Sabody Archipelago where they meet Silvers Rayleigh who sailed with Gol D. Roger. They need him to make their ship submersible to go to Fishman Island. At the same time several infamous rookie pirates known as The Worst Generation have arrived in Sabody in order to continue into the part of The Grand Line known as the New World.

The Straw Hats also find Hachi an ex-member of Arlong’s crew and meet a mermaid named Camie. She gets captured by some human traffickers who put her up for auction. Luffy punches a Celestial Dragon (super nobel scum) and they rescue Camie. This causes the Navy to send in some big guns. Luffy fights alongside Trafalgar Law and Eustess Kidd (two of the Worst Generation, Luffy and Zoro are also part of the Worst Generation). The Straw Hats get separated and thrown to different islands by Bartholomew Kuma (remember him from the end of Thriller Bark?). It is their most devastating loss thus far.

Luffy lands on Amazon Lily where men are forbidden. The Amazon’s try to kill him but he has plot armor. Their leader Hancock (one of the 7 Warlords) becomes smitten with Luffy. News breaks that Ace will be executed and Luffy asks Hancock to help him sneak into the super jail Impel Down to save Ace. In order to take Luffy to Impel Down, Hancock must agree to be present for Ace’s execution at Marineford.

While journeying deeper into Impel Down, Luffy runs into Buggy the Clown, Mr. 3 and Mr. 2 Bon Clay. Buggy and Mr. 3 are trying to escape and Bon Clay chooses to help his friend Luffy but nearly abandons him. The warden Magellan uses his powerful poison and practically kills Luffy. Bon Clay desperately tries to save Luffy and the two of them are rescued by the Newkama who hide deep within in Impel Down.

Luffy’s life is saved by the revolutionary Ivankov. Luffy tries to reach Ace but unfortunately doesn’t get to the lowest floor before Ace is shipped out to Marineford for his public execution. Luffy and Ivankov break out Crocodile and the Fishman Karate master Jimbei. A riot occurs within Impel Down and many more inmates escape from their cells thanks to Buggy and Mr. 3. Crocodile springs Mr. 1 as well.

Buggy’s posse, Crocodile, Mr. 1, Jimbei, Luffy, Ivankov and the Newkama narrowly escape Impel Down thanks to Bon Clay staying behind to open the gate. His fate is unknown. The group rushes down to Marineford to save Ace.

At Marineford the Navy reveals that Ace is the son of Gol D. Roger and prepares to execute him as the world watches. Whitebeard’s crew among others arrive to stop the execution. A huge battle occurs between the pirates and the Navy. Several of the 7 Warlords (including Hancock) fight alongside the Navy Admirals. Eventually the Impel Down escapees join the fray.

Luffy briefly butts heads with Whitebeard when he says he will be the one to save Ace. Luffy makes a valiant effort but it’s all for not. Admiral Akinu uses his lava powers to burn a hole through Firefist Ace. Ace dies in Luffy’s arms and Luffy is critically wounded again. Whitebeard is also killed. Shanks arrives and brings the epic battle to an end. Luffy is taken by Trafalgar Law (who is actually a skilled surgeon) to receive medical treatment.

During all of this time, each of the Straw Hats must overcome their own trials which hone their skills. Usopp survives an island of man eating plants. Robin travels with the revolutionary army. Chopper makes peace between some humans and giant birds. Franky finds Dr. Vegapunk’s old laboratory and blows himself up. Brooke is mistaken for a demon by some cultists and becomes a pop music sensation. Nami lands on a sky island and studies weather science. Sanji gets a whole new perspective living among the drag queen Newkama’s. And Zoro ends up on a dreary island with the ghost girl Perona and Hawkeye Mihawk and he humbles himself to ask Hawkeye to train him. In short, Kuma seemingly sent them exactly where they needed to go to grow.

Luffy is beside himself with grief after losing Ace and frustrated at himself for failing to save his brother. He thinks back to his childhood with Ace and their other blood brother Sabo. They vowed to set off and be great pirates some day. Sabo was part of a Nobel family but hated his sheltered life. He is forbidden from seeing Luffy and Ace but he rebels by trying to sail away from the island. Unfortunately he is seemingly killed when a Celestial Dragon destroy’s the boy’s small vessel. Now Luffy has lost both of his brothers. Jimbei manages to beat some sense into Luffy and our hero remembers he isn’t alone, his crew is still out there.

The crew initially thinks they should reunite with Luffy as soon as possible once they heard of Ace’s death but Luffy leaves them a message that tells them to wait 2 years before reuniting at Sabody where their ship the Thousand Sunny resides. Luffy realizes he has to get much stronger in orde to protect his crew and takes 2 years to train with Rayleigh.
