Task 185: The Picnic - Thanks (and an appeal for footage!)

Thank you so much to all the people – so many more people than I’d expected – who came to the picnic on Saturday and accomplished Task 185 so spectacularly. It was the strangest and best feeling to be in the middle of it all, like being at your own wedding (to yourself) but far weirder and even warmer. Every single person I met was enthusiastic and polite and interesting and so many had come from so far away, I was blown away and had to sit down for ages afterwards.

I should also apologise that the plan was slightly scuppered so the ‘tour’ was less a tour, more a walk down a hill, past a church, along a road, through some garages, then back along the road, past the church and up that hill. Originally, when I thought 60 people might turn up, I was hoping to walk down the high street, show everyone the home of Chesham’s mayor, Liza Tarbuck’s girl-guide hut and Tim Vine’s stationers, before ending up at Chesham United – home of Hugh Dennis’ spectacular goal. The ridiculous numbers meant we couldn’t go through the high street, and the football club (who had very kindly said we could all come in) then couldn’t quite handle however many of us there were (estimates are between 1500 and 1800). So, sorry we couldn’t all stay there for the match but I’m glad most of you got to at least see the Meadow.

Thanks too for some amazing gifts that people unnecessarily brought; Taskmaster cakes, musical instruments, homemade Taskmaster Top Trumps and many more, all much appreciated. And thanks to all the Taskmaster team, too many to mention, who ensured it all went nearly smoothly.

One more favour though, if anyone has any footage of the day that they’d be happy to share, I’d love to see it. I had a gopro with me when I arrived but typically forgot to turn it on (two separate people described the event as “an endearing shambles”). We have other footage but the more the better. We might well do something with it – no idea what – so if you’re happy to hand it over, that would be brilliant. Please send anything and everything to - taskmaster@avalonuk.com

And that’s it. I’m absolutely planning to do something similar again. It was the best day.
Thanks one last time to everyone for coming, not complaining about the walking, not leaving a single item of litter, not getting run over, sticking around for hours and hours in that never-ending queue, and generally being nice and adventurous.

And to anyone who went to Essex because they didn’t realise it was a minus sign not a hyphen, I can only apologise. I hope you had a good time too.
