Comes… The Suite of History: SOULCALIBUR VI at EVO 2022!
Hey SC Community,
This is Chapter XLVII. After throwing down the gauntlet and announcing I'd do my own event in SCVI did not have the main stage at Evo 2022, I received an overwhelming amount of support and private messages asking to assist. After discussing the logistics of my plans, I was convinced that it would be better to run a lower cost event - both to involve as much of the SC Community as possible, and to serve as a sort of “job interview” for my future SC Tournament plans. To this end, I will be hosting THE SUITE OF HISTORY alongside North American TO SC legends Sabin Deus and Bigpapachunk, with support from content creators Boom and Father Ramon and EVO 2019 Japan champion (and current all region king of LoR) Bluegod.
WHY EVO? WHY NOT YOUR OWN THING?
Simply put, my own thing is not economically feasible for a majority of the SC community, and we have not run enough proven offline tournaments to convince overseas competitors to spend as much as they'd need to in order to attend. Anyone who knows me and has been a part of my events such as BONUS ROUND x FAUSTIAN or BATTLE BREAK knows how player focused I am. The cost of that typically comes solely from me, and as such, scaling up means I need more sponsors and to actually charge entry fees. To do what I want to do, my entry fees would be closer to EVO/Combo Breaker and that's asking a lot. Let me use the stage of EVO to show we can run an event worth the cost.
Under Rick Thiher's guidance, I can't wait to see EVO not only return to form, but evolve into an even better experience for players. The prestige of this year’s EVO will bring out SC players from across the world - plus cost enough that hopefully, if we run this event well, it will be possible to convince you (especially international players) to come out to a cheaper event that is SC focused. I wanna see Student again, dammit.
WHAT WE CAN CONFIRM RIGHT NOW:
Right now, I can confirm that we have reserved a suite at the Mandalay Bay that will serve as THE SUITE OF HISTORY. While the actual convention floor is where we will run the tournament, our suite will serve as dedicated casuals for the entire EVO runtime. We’ll have around 6 set-ups for maximum comfort, plus snacks and drinks (including local vices). I will coordinate on food orders and other necessities with a dedicated vehicle on site for trips as needed. THE SUITE OF HISTORY will have a suggested donation for entry for these reasons, thanks for your understanding.
As for the tournament, before any Matcherino or further donations, we are starting the pot at $1000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third. If we hit 100 entrants, we will extend payout to Top 8, and increase these numbers too.
Right now, Sabin Deus and Chapter are bankrolling everything you've read about and trust us, we're no Saudi oil princes or whatever, it's gonna hurt. That is why the registration fee for this event is set at $20.
Your $20 goes towards the following: $5 is set aside to help pay support staff such as bracket runners, TOs, streaming services, manual labor for set-ups (this a far ass walk, man). $15 is going towards more money in the pot (therefore, with 100 entrants we will add another $1500).
IN FUTURE WEEKS
We will have an official video trailer for the event, Matcherino, volunteer sheets, set-up requests and commentary applications. We are also exploring very limited merch to mark the event, available for purchase only at The SUITE OF HISTORY or for free with enough of a donation, with the proceeds going to support staff.
We are also EXTREMELY interested in running a team tournament at THE SUITE OF HISTORY, perhaps New School vs Old School, in a 9v9 fashion (or 12v12 if we get enough interested parties). Linkorz vs Kayane? Incendiate vs Loloroco? Bluegod vs OmegaXCN? Let's make it happen. Message @ChapterXLVII if you're interested. Team tournament at this point won't have an entry fee because it will mostly be bragging rights, but this can change once we talk to players. There's always money matches!
