RCBA Statement Condemning Violence at the U.S. Capitol

The Richland County Bar Association joins the ABA and numerous other bar associations in condemning the assault on the Capitol this week by protesters during Congress’ certification of the Electoral College votes. The members of this bar are sworn to uphold the rule of law and respect our Constitutional right to a peaceful protest. The attack on the Capitol was not peaceful. To incite fear, hatred, and violence in the name of democracy is shameful and unconscionable and must be denounced by President Trump and our Congressional leaders.

We further recognize the conversations among our communities concerning the response to this attack as compared to protests across our country concerning equality. To that end, we must protect the integrity of the democratic system for all people. Nelson Mandela said, “It is not our diversity which divides us; it is not our ethnicity, or religion or culture that divides us. Since we have achieved our freedom, there can only be one division amongst us: between those who cherish democracy and those who do not.”
