Don't map for the OWC if you don't want your time wasted.

I didn't really want to go public about this, but I figured it would be better to share my own experience so other people don't need to waste their time. I'm not here to attack any individuals in particular, I'm censoring all of their names. I don't think they're bad people, I'm just annoyed with how terrible the organization itself was and the time it ultimately wasted.

I signed up to map for the OWC maybe in like July, somewhere around August the organizers contacted me and told me they wanted an AR8 HD map. I actually signed up thinking they wouldn't even accept so I was pretty stoked that they did, I didn't really have motivation to map at that point in time but this gave me the motivation for it.

At first, I was told they wanted me to get this done by September 7th at the latest because they didn't want to keep looking at earlier stages and coordinating it all at once as you can see here: https://i.imgur.com/Akdf6bC.png

So I had no problem with this and we went through a slight back and forth modding phase that lasted a couple of days. I wanted to ensure that my map was done so I knew I could shift my focus on to other things. I received a message that basically told me yeah, other than these small things it seems good. So I corrected those, and asked when the plan to upload the map is. https://i.imgur.com/eIodZyJ.png https://i.imgur.com/rXBf01P.png

So great, I was done I just need to wait until they tell me to upload. Atleast that's how I thought it was going to play out. 5 days before the showcase I received a message telling me that I need to buff it. I thought that it was kind of ridiculous considering how clear they made it that they wanted to ensure this stuff was done before September 7th, and I did everything I could to make sure this was the case. I'm just guessing they were too lazy or something and didn't bother checking until a few days before. https://i.imgur.com/4TAX5Nk.png

Anyway, I still did some buffs to the map and they didn't think it was enough. It was kind of frustrating, but they still suggested other quickfix alternatives like adjusting the AR. I told them I wasn't generally for quickfixing, but if it can be done I would prefer it since I was somewhat busy this week. Otherwise, if I absolutely need to make changes I can figure it out. https://i.imgur.com/V5RneBf.png

So I buffed the map again 2 days before the showcase, 3 1/2 days after they asked me to do this, and I pinged them a few times over the span of 24 hours until I decided to ping someone else in the server who wasn't deliberately ignoring me only for him to tell me that they decided to use another map and they can't fit mine in anywhere. https://i.imgur.com/EfoPMrf.png

I was very confused to say the least, so I had asked a couple of questions. For some reason, they "thought" that I said that I couldn't do it so they went and found someone else which tbh I just don't buy all things considered. They didn't tell me at all that they had gone out to find someone else. https://i.imgur.com/thkLRPm.png

So after that, I've basically accepted they just don't like the diff or whatever and were too afraid to tell me this or something. I wrote a message on my thoughts on the situation to get a reply back that admittedly frustrated me because it doesn't feel very truthful. https://i.imgur.com/b3rFRYb.png

Regarding that final response, well a lot of it is pretty annoying. "I've been semi dead" doesn't mean much to me when there's multiple of you and it was supposed to be done and checked nearly two months ago. Then I'm told that they decided on using another map because "right now my map in its current state overlaps a bit with something else" even though they literally told me the issue was that it needed to be buffed and not completely changed. He also said that "they didn't expect to have this many mappers onboard" but they are literally the ones picking and choosing the mappers, it was literally your choice, it's not like a bunch of random people walked in the room and contributed against your will, you can't "not expect" that. Even though I told them I thought it would be difficult, I never said I couldn't do it. They didn't communicate with me at all. I feel like they just didn't like my diff, threw me under the bus but were too afraid to give me an actual reason as to why they didn't want my difficulty, asked someone else to speedmap it, and then they presumably deliberately ignored my changes and messages until the day of the showcase. And quite frankly, I have absolutely no reason to believe they're being truthful about wanting me to help next year.

Some other mappers I told about this situation told me about their experiences of not receiving responses for long durations of time, and also some other people who were asked to speedmap because they didn't like the diff someone made. I don't know how they handled those situations, but I have somewhat of a suspicion that they were handled the same as mine.

So yeah, I feel like my time was wasted pretty hard and if you plan on mapping for the OWC you should keep my experience in mind. I was told by a few people that I shouldn't post this until the after the grand finals, but nowadays I'm not even really a player and I'm going to consider peoples time more valuable than wasting peoples time for a tournament, sorry.
