What are the financial incentives for identifying the particular cause of your death in NC?

1. State law allows life insurance companies to limit death benefits paid on suicides to the total premiums paid, if death occurs within the first two years of the insurance contract.

2. Under the at-fault liability law for auto accidents, who is blamed for the accident matters; but the cause of death itself is presumed known from the police accident report.

3. County medical examiners receive a $200 bounty per body for examining deaths resulting from violence, poisoning, accident, suicide or homicide; occurring suddenly when the deceased had been in apparent good health or when unattended by a physician; occurring in a jail, prison, correctional institution or in police custody; occurring in State facilities operated in accordance with Part 5 of Article 4 of Chapter 122C of theGeneral Statutes; occurring pursuant to Article 19 of Chapter 15 of the General Statutes; or occurring under any suspicious, unusual or unnatural circumstance.

4. If you were attended by a physician and you were diagnosed as having COVID-19 illness, there were (and are) wonderful incentives for your death certificate to show that disease as the cause.

P.S. If you want to know what the causes of death for the United States were for January-April 2020, hold your breath for another 3 years and somewhere between 1 and 6 months (based on the CDC's performance statistics). The data will be available then.
