Regarding SC2 Youtube Content & Content Creators
The past two days there has been some drama regarding a Starcraft youtube channel called "SC2 journey." - A channel uploading Starcraft VODS (full, uncut). I've seen SC2HL mentioned a few times with some comparisons made and I wanted to discuss it a little.
First of, the permission:
The other channel mentioned he handles permission by telling tournament organizers: "Hey im gonna upload your content, let me know if you want it down"
For SC2HL, I make sure I get permission from tournaments before I upload anything. Some tournaments are not on the channel because of this, but thats ok and completely respectable. The way the other channel owner is doing it is definitely not proper.
The editing:
The other channel uploads the full games, no cutting and he basically doesnt even have to look at the game before rendering it, add some thumbnail that doesnt represent the game.
For SC2HL, I admit the editing is not that advanced. Usually I aim to take out 50% of the game (25 minute game in 12.5 minutes). Cut out downtime and make a few cuts. I guess on average there's around 5-10 cuts per game?
Why im writing this is mostly because of a statement he released on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/dej3ty/i_would_like_to_raise_awareness_about_a_channel/f2xf3ou/) and I dont want to be seen as sharing his same thought.
I could analyze his statement a lot more and the assumptions he makes are quite ridiculous. In general, I think its very surprising the owner of the channel thinks he's in his right. Some of the claims he makes are outright false. For example, that his videos are claimed and the money goes to Blizzard. This in fact is false, Blizzard does not claim WCS content.
Going back to my channel situation, I definitely admit what I do with SC2HL is still questionable, no way around it. However, I try to do it in the best way possible and would not be doing anything without permission. I hope over the past 7 years the channel has been positive for Starcraft as a whole.
