Blucini struggles to climb up the steep vertical tunnel

She waved her paws getting the attention of her friends. "It's here! Here! There's an opening here!"

They finally caught up to her after what felt like forever. Frell shielded her eyes while looking straight up in disbelief. Sure enough, there was a crack that sunlight was pouring through. Dust motes swam in and out of the remote beam.

"Think you could make it?" Nina asked.

Frell didn't answer. One moment she was standing next to them, the next she was gone. There was a clatter above them, a scrabbling noise, and an angry grunt. Frell landed back on the ground with a wet thump.

"I can make it, but it's too small for me to get through. And there's nothing smooth for me to get a hold on up there."

Blucini regretted being the one to suggest that maybe she could make it up there. As a small cat, she had no trouble jumping as high as her frog friend.

She felt a rock under her paw crumble and swore.

She had never been particularly athletically gifted or, for that matter, naturally gifted in much of anything. She had been a stellar student when it came to just barely passing the classes, and abysmal in getting any honors or accolades. Even though she had grown up in the mountains, she didn't usually have to travel by foot or climb the treacherous winding paths.

Her claws were fully extended and she struggled to find another gap in the rocks to grab onto. The rock that had fallen before finally hit the ground. It felt like everything was moving in slow motion. Shouldn't that rock have already hit a minute ago?

Was the light getting brighter? She couldn't tell.

Her head felt light.

She made the mistake of looking down.

"Keep going!" Nina called up. "Don't give up! You can do it, Blue!"

"Why me?" she yelled out but her friends on the ground couldn't hear her. She was the smallest and the only one that could fit through the tiny and narrow tunnel up to the surface. If anyone could make it, it had to be her.
