Plan for 2018

Plan for 2018:

-- 1 in-depth design commentary series (non-RTS, Q1)
-- 1 in-depth design comparison video (non-RTS, Q2)
-- 1 in-depth design series on StarCraft II (Q3)
-- Finish grind to GM (Q1-Q3) and start streaming (Q4)
-- Bunch of one-off videos+articles - SC, AoE, etc (year-round)

The series may turn into multi-hour videos, I'm not sure yet which way I think is better. More details for folks who are interested:

The StarCraft work has a very long lead time, which is why it's pushed out to later in the year. Previously, I focused on the competitive side of the game, which aligned with my own interests. Each project required a ton of research and work, but the footage, anecdotal experience, and "texture and color" offered by time with the game came without extra effort. By contrast, my most recent project (Axiom Review) required dedicated playtime outside of my normal ladder sessions and took more than two months to complete. The same applies to the new StarCraft series I'm working on for this year. All this means is that this project will take a lot of time, so it won't be released anytime soon.

The non-RTS commentary series stems from work I planned to do in 2015, but shelved because I wasn't sure I could pull it off. The Banjo-Kazooie and StarCraft series taught me a few things and gave me the confidence needed to take on this project. I know most folks here follow me for my RTS content, and the game I'll be covering is more than fifteen years old, but it's mainstream enough that I think many of you will find it relatable and enjoyable anyway.

I'll continue doing one-off pieces anytime good topics come up. I'd like to sort out my notes and data on StarCraft free-to-play and do a couple proper pieces analyzing how it's turned out. I also have a rough outline for a ~30 minute Age of Empires video and ideas for a bunch more Age videos I'd like to do. All of this is time-dependent and it's possible none of it will see the light of the day. I originally planned on carving out dedicated time for Age content, but recently I haven't been interested. Hopefully this changes later in the year.

Last September I started an earnest effort to get better at StarCraft in order to get back in shape for the launch of AoE4. My goal is to reach mid-season Grandmaster in NA off the back of a macro Terran style, playing mostly bio. This works out to roughly 5400MMR. I'm at 4850 right now, meaning it will likely take nine months to cross the finish line. After that I'll start doing ladder streams. I'm guessing there's not much demand for that kind of content from me, but I'd like to nail down the technical setup and get comfortable with live commentary so I can start streaming other games. Maybe things will turn out differently, but I have a hunch that my best StarCraft content is the deep and prepared kind rather than a live stream. By contrast there's a few other games I'd like to cover more informally than a scripted video or long-form article, and a Twitch stream is a good place to do so.

Thanks for reading and thanks for all your support. 2017 was a good year and I hope 2018 is more of the same.

All the best,
brownbear
