As a part of a video that I'm working on I wrote out a quick thought experiment. I think it does a good job of getting to the core of what irks me about how Blizzard is doing gear.
Here is a quick thought experiment. You flip a coin twice. Once to see if you win the item, and another time to see if it is item level 800 or item level 900.
You can preform this one time per week.
Now contrast that with a similar, but different experiment. You flip a coin and then roll a magical 100 sided dice. Flipping the coin determines weather you get an item. Rolling the dice determines it’s item level from 800 to 900.
The first example allows people to win very clearly. The second example makes winning a far harder and longer process. if "winning" takes longer, then ideally people will play the game for longer. Right? Or perhaps it will induce apathy in the whole system.
