Well the drama rages on regarding this SC2 progamer and his remarks towards his female opponent on Twitter It's annoyingly obtuse with people rationalising and splitting hairs. A bit of a reality check. Yes, men and women are equal. No, that does not mean they are exactly the same. Yes, some things are going to offend women more than they are men. That's very generalised but on average yes, a woman is going to find "I'm going to rape you" a more unpleasant remark than a man is. If you want to dig further, you'll find that its like an ex-convict male would find it more offensive than a regular male, or a gay man would react differently to it than a hetero man, or a trans man etc etc etc. No, not everyone reacts the same way and no they can't be expected to either.
On the whole maybe, just maybe, we don't tell our female opponents that we plan on raping them over Twitter. Does that sound good? It's not really a hard thing not to do, just having a little bit of self awareness, right? I couldnt care less what you say privately between friends but if you're gonna be a dummy and post something like that on twitter than hashtag the tournament you're playing in, you've gotta expect consequences. Come on, some of us are trying to do this eSports thing as a business, maybe if you're a progamer you should also treat it like one.
Here's a notion, maybe not telling women we plan on raping them via Twitter, joke (where's the punchline?) or not, isn't actually handling them with kidgloves, it's basic social skills. Doesn't make them special, doesn't make them weak, simply means you're taking into account their circumstances and having a wee bit of empathy before you open your mouth.
People are not the same, they react differently to different things. You can't be expected to take all of that into account if you don't know the person but basic common sense would perhaps prevail on the subject of "Should I post to thousands of people that I am going to rape this female opponent, yes/no?". Does it really have to be a debate? Just, don't do that thing? Why am I even posting about this? Shouldn't this go without saying?
