It's amazing how black and white--gorgeous and, in almost every way, artistically superior to color--distances us from the subject, freezing it in an impregnable past. The color brings an instant immediacy, transforming these people from relics and crash-zooming them into focus so they are unavoidably relevant, forcing us to deal with them as if they were contemporaries.
