The WikiLeaks Forum refused to provide WikiLeaks with the email address of all 15.000 Forum members.

Here is the edited Chat log between the WikiLeaks Forum and WikiLeaks when we are asked to provide them with the email addresses of ALL 15.000 Forum members Needless to say, we refused.

To protect the identity of the WikiLeaks source, we have edited out the full Jabber name of the individual we were communicating with

As both used @jabber.ccc.de we have marked the communication as follows:

@jabber.ccc.de -> wikileaks
FORUM -> WikiLeaks Forum administrator

(8:16:26 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: ping
(8:16:33 PM) FORUM: pong
(8:16:48 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: wondered how you were doing with that email list
(8:17:08 PM) FORUM: will be no problem.....just need to know exactly what u would like to have

(8:17:34 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: list of all the user emails. could be csv or whatever is easy for you

(8:17:34 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: thanks
(8:17:50 PM) FORUM:all 15.000 members e mails ?
(8:18:45 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: yes, opls
(8:18:47 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: *pls
(8:18:53 PM) FORUM: hmm
(8:19:01 PM) FORUM: one question:
(8:20:00 PM) FORUM: I wondering what 15.000 members would do to me if I passed their e mail addresses on without their knowledge

(8:20:59 PM) FORUM: please advise ;-)

(8:21:16 PM) FORUM: I would also like to know for what purpose if possible

(8:22:40 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: the perception of all these people is that WLForum is run by WL so they wont object. To be honest, its prob the only reason they felt safe doing so in the first place. As far as they are concerned we all ready have the email address. We will send them FoWL invite.

(8:23:06 PM) FORUM: ahhh...ok

(8:24:18 PM) FORUM: but how do these poeple think the WikiLeaks forum is run by WikiLeaks when you own website states the forum is run by supporters ---> " Supporters run our irc channel, Facebook site, and the WikiLeaks Forum. Whilst we appreciate their work we can not vouch for their security or content. No official WikiLeaks comment will be given over these channels. "

(8:24:30 PM) FORUM: http://wikileaks.org/Supporters.html

(9:34:39 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: we all know this
(9:34:43 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: but most people dont read this
(9:34:44 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: as we have seen
(9:37:59 PM) FORUM: okay.....but what if they do ?
(9:38:20 PM) FORUM: then I will be crucified :-(

(9:39:46 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: you could email them all first and ask if they mind.

(9:40:20 PM) FORUM: Well I could create a forum post and tweet it
(9:42:04 PM) FORUM: 15.000 e mail addresses
(9:42:35 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: no, dont do that
(9:42:37 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: jsut eamil them
(9:42:43 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: dont create a forum post
(9:42:49 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: then you dont know who's reading it

(9:46:40 PM) FORUM: lol...Im trying to imagine how fast the forums mail server will be flagged as a spam account after sending out 15.000 e mails. We do have the option to send ALL members e mail via the forums mail server account but even then....we would have to read and respond to 15.000 e mails

(9:48:20 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: just say you can not respond individually, but you will take out of the list anyone who does not want their email passed to us

(9:48:45 PM) FORUM: and this you need to invite people to FoWL ?

(9:57:44 PM) FORUM: The only way aruond it would be if you made a statement declaring that WL is co owner of the forum. This way no one would have to risk anything

(9:59:58 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: that's ridiculous and basically just seems to say you dont want to do this for some odd reason. there is a huge lump to us having a copy of those emails and doing that

(10:02:16 PM) FORUM: I know its ridiculous but even more ridiculous to remark that I dont want to do this for some " odd reason ". The odd reason is that I would be breaking the law giving 15.000 e mail addresses away

(10:02:29 PM) FORUM: what do you mean by a " huge lump " ?
(10:03:03 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: *jump
(10:06:34 PM) FORUM: okay.....how about me sending ALL 15.000 members an invite to join FoWL ?. Isn't this why you want the e mail addresses ?

(10:07:28 PM) FORUM: wouldnt this be a fair idea ?

(10:12:54 PM) FORUM: if you want, you can write the invite and I will send it to every member on the forum ...

(10:14:45 PM) FORUM: i will see if such a thing is possible.
(10:15:26 PM) FORUM: sure,,, I mean...if you only want to invite them to FoWL then why not do it with me NOT in jail for breaking the law ;-)

(10:29:31 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: what bit makes you think you would be breaking the law? what are forum terms and conditions?

(10:30:55 PM) FORUM:the forum is hosted in XXXXXX. It is illegal to forward e mail to 3rd parties if not specifically granted by the user at registration

(10:31:06 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: k
(10:31:27 PM) FORUM: I cant forward IP addresses, location or e mail addresses without prior permission from user

(10:32:11 PM) @jabber.ccc.de: understood

(10:34:27 PM) FORUM: providing you just want to invite the members to join FoWL, the easiest way around this would be to invite them and we would send ALL 15.000 members the invite via email from the forum
