From the great @brettrhetoric: "What has government done that’s been so good? I guess I would have to say roads, bridges, dams, airports, railroads, canals, protected riverways, forests, parks, compulsory schooling, public schools with tenure and generous pension systems (you’re welcome), mandatory holidays, 40-hour work weeks, weekends, food inspections, restaurant inspections, food safety, civil rights, voting rights, police protection, social security, the Smithsonian, great art galleries that make no financial sense, school orchestras, the Lincoln Memorial that makes me cry every time, the CDC, vaccinations, workplace safety, water quality, alternative energy development, Pell Grants, student loans, the GI Bill, care for our veterans, environmental protections, services for widows and orphans the private sector has no incentive to help and the church has mostly abandoned, space exploration, science that hasn’t yet figured out how to turn a profit, the Internet…let me say that one again…the Internet (looks down at fingers while glow of screen reflects off of glasses)…via ARPANET within the Dept. of Defense…and, on occasion – when they get it right – a military that is second to none in dipensing some well-earned whoopass. And, more humanitarian aid than any other institution or government in the history of the world.
I don’t blindly put my trust in any institution, none of them have cornered the evil or stupid market yet. But, I probably put more faith in those designed to serve the greater good, over those designed to serve their own good."
