When I lived in Sicily, I would frequently visit the summit of Mt. Etna, where lava flowed freely. Standing next to a river of molten rock, my arm outstretched over it, was the hottest thing I have ever experienced. I recall someone scooping some lava out with a long pole equipped with a steel bowl at one end, and dropping it into a massive drum of water that, when it made contact, immediately flashed into vapor, and made a sound not unlike the screaming of a dying animal. Extraordinary stuff. http://io9.com/what-lava-looks-like-when-poured-over-ice-615928722
