The extension of or infringement on any particular segment of society's civil rights affects everyone's civil rights. Do not make the mistake of thinking these decisions occur in a vacuum. A white man is every bit as elevated by laws promoting racial equality as a black man. A straight woman is every bit as elevated by laws promoting sexual equality as a gay woman. Civil rights are human rights, and we make a category error when we conclude they are of no consequence to us because we are not black or we are not gay. Indifference to civil rights is as myopic and misguided as resistance to them.
