"Steven Spielberg Predicts 'Implosion' of Film Industry.'" I hope the irony of this prediction is not lost on #StevenSpielberg. He, more than any other director, is responsible for the creation of the summer blockbuster and films with budgets that rival the GDPs of some small nations--the very sorts of films he (correctly, I think) predicts will clobber an entire industry if and when the bubble bursts. A complete overhaul of how we ingest our entertainment is inevitable--we just can't seem to agree on the shape of what's to come. That said, he's right when he asserts that cable television is leading the way, both in creativity and sheer verve. I do not want to imagine a world without dark theaters and giant screens, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't finding infinitely more fulfillment from the small screen in my living room.
