Have you checked out any of the trailers for next season's new TV shows? Well, here's a round up for you (minus CBS, which hasn't posted any of their upfront material yet).
It really appears as if network TV is taking some of its cues from basic and premium cable, which has been radically terraforming the landscape the past decade or so. Many of these shows seem bolder and more epic than anything previously attempted (lots of fantasy and science fiction amongst the dramas, and, finally, sitcoms that, thanks to shows like "30 Rock" and "Arrested Development," are breaking away from the multiple camera, stage-bound, laugh-tracked model). But then, this audaciousness may also be due to the fact that pilots are made with heaps of cash the regular season will never see.
Pilots sometimes use up every good idea or joke in the first episode or, conversely, contain greatness that, like wine, needs some time to breath and come alive. Many of these appear more like movies than television series'. How some of these shows plan on sustaining multiple seasons, much less a single one, is beyond me. While it's fun seeing so much behind-the-camera film talent taking a whack at the small screen, I'm concerned many of these shows do not lend themselves to long-term storytelling (frankly, I'd love for the next television transformation to be something more akin to the shorter, more limited British model). That said, many are clever and undeniably creative and they appear to be doing things differently than has been done before. I can appreciate that even if I certainly don't want to watch every one.
