On this NSA stuff: If we're trying to defend our nation, what is it we're defending? Is it just the land and/or the people?

Or is it the principles that make the USA what it is that we're so proud to be a part of in the first place?

I believe it's the latter. And if I'm right, it makes no sense to take away our rights and freedoms in order to defend them, does it?
