One out of every five Americans is a Catholic. But if you dig into that number, you discover it is propped up largely by several decades of Latino immigration. In fact, one out of every three Americans who grew up in the church, has left. Note to the conclave: a younger, more dynamic Pope isn't going to help. Your faith, and its moldy, anachronistic practices, are not simply facing down a transient hurdle. Rather you are bearing witness to the beginning of your end. You simply cannot stand toe to toe with our information-saturated, science-infused modernity and hope to prevail. When historians look back, they will point to our generation as the dividing line between ancient, moldering superstitions and a new wave of rational, secular thought. Amen.
