Historical distance lessens our negative opinion of people's actions. The author is right in that many of the men listed here also killed with wanton abandon in their thirst for land and power, but historical distance now allows us to romanticize them. Case in point: we have epic movies about Alexander and Khan. Will we ever see, 1000 years from now, a favorable film about Hitler? Not likely. As the author says, if you want to be remembered that way, you better win the wars you start. Fascinating stuff. http://www.smh.com.au/executive-style/culture/blogs/all-men-are-liars/great-men-are-bad-men-20130207-2dzmi.html
