The left is lacking basic problem-solving skills on this gun issue, which is weird because they tend to be pretty logical about many other things, almost to a fault.

Problem-solving skills work like this:

Identify a problem.
"Mass shootings are a problem."

Analyze the problem.
"What has changed that has led to the emergence of this problem?"

Formulate possible solutions.
"How do we address what has changed to make things like they were before?"

Evaluate these possible solutions.
"How does this solution address the change that led to this problem?"

Choose a solution.
"Based on what I've learned, which solution works best?"

There have always been a lot of guns in this country. But mass shootings are a relatively recent thing. So, logic states that guns are not the problem. Why are we still stuck on this?
