I was recently asked what I'd do about guns in this country had I the power. Well, frankly, I'd repeal the 2nd Amendment, but I don't pretend for a moment that is possible--yet--so let's start here: A full and complete ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Those with such weapons will turn them over to the government immediately. High capacity magazines and armor piercing rounds are out. I'd add far more stringent handgun checks, to include 21-years of age and older; mandatory, at cost, educational courses for all firearms; a full month wait before possession; extensive background checks with fingerprints; and finally, gun insurance. I'd utterly abolish the perverse gun show loophole. Those caught carrying illegally have a mandatory five-year prison sentence. And no guns whatsoever on college campuses, national parks, trains, government property, etc. All firearms must be stored in a locked container, or equipped with a tamper-resistant mechanical lock or other safety device so as to render the weapon inoperable by any person other than the owner, and guns in cars must be secured in the trunk and unloaded--any violation forfeits the permit and the gun is retrieved and destroyed.
