If you are pro-life and abortion is the single issue motivating you this election season, consider these facts. Twenty-three years of Republican presidents since Roe v. Wade have essentially done nothing to restrict access to abortion. Some of the steepest declines in abortion rates have come during Democratic administrations. Rates are most likely to drop in response to contraception access and (non-abstinence) sex education. Women (especially poor and working class) are much less likely to choose abortion when their economic prospects improve. Global evidence demonstrates that banning abortion doesn't necessarily reduce the rate, it just makes it more dangerous. Abortion is illegal in many Latin American countries, which have abortion rates nearly four times that of the U.S. Some Northern European countries with very liberal abortion laws have significantly lower abortion rates than the U.S. It's simple, change the social conditions, change the rate of abortions. Voting for a "pro-life" candidate does nothing to stop abortion. In fact, since several million conservative, religious voters say abortion is the threshold issue that gets them to the polls, I submit no party or candidate is ever going to seriously address the topic once they get in office. If they do, they lose the base of their support. Abortion is a culture war issue used to build political power. If you want to protect choice, vote Obama. If you want to protect life...vote Obama.
