The reason they where able to make those is that they had some starting funds. You know, to start the business when you don't have money, but great ideas…
Independent Development doesn't mean that you have to die starving while making your software on 10 years old soft/hardware in your basement. It just mean you're making the game YOU want, the way YOU want and get revenues from it the way YOU want.
