The end of OrionRank and the future with @UltRankSSB

Hello! Recently, OrionRank 2022 and UltRank released. Both had successful launches after over a month of work.

The effort that rankings take is immense. Algorithm work, graphical work, video editing, voice acting, writing - all went into both OrionRank and UltRank. OrionRank was a team of just myself & EazyFreezie, and he did the bulk of the work on OrionRank 2022.

We like to do a lot of projects & we have a lot of ideas, but it’s difficult to press forward with just the two of us doing work on these rankings. It’s a massive time investment that cuts into other projects and, at this point, is causing burnout.

After the collaborative efforts with UltRank, which saw a larger team handle the many aspects of the ranking, we agreed it was time to retire OrionRank. We don’t want these rankings to inadvertently compete with one another, and splitting heavy workloads between both just doesn’t feel sustainable.

What does this mean for us? Well, we’re shifting efforts to UltRank, which will absorb some concepts from OrionRank. It isn’t OrionRank 2.0 - it will have tangible differences as a result of it being a much larger collaborative effort. Eazy & I intend to put our efforts into UltRank, with a combined effort of former PGR workers as well as other independent rankings that formed over the years.

We will continue to post weekly updates on events, qualified players, & character data - but these will now be under the UltRank umbrella, and OrionRank is retired. I do intend to do retro rankings using the OrionRank label, but no future rankings will use it.

We intend to remain fully transparent, with tons of public information, and with more time we can post some exciting & elaborate projects we’ve intended to make for quite some time, now that we don’t have to work full-time for a month on OrionRank.

Thank you all for the support for OrionRank after all these years. We worked very hard on it & hope you’ll all enjoy our efforts in 2023! 2022 was an exciting way to end OrionRank after its humble beginnings in 2016, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of the community.
