At the Institute of Philosophy of the University Kassel a PhD position is offered in the area of philosophy of mind / philosophy of science. This is a part-time position with 65% of the working hours of a full-time employee. The position is part of the research project “Philosophy of Situated Cognition” and is available for a period of two years with the possibility to extend the position for another year (2 + 1). This project is loosely associated with further philosophers who are working in the field of philosophy of biology and philosophy of science (Prof. Köchy, Dr. Michelini, Dr. Meunier).

The Philosophy of Situated Cognition (PSC) is concerned with the so-called 4E theories. These approaches, also known as extended mind, enactivism, embedded mind, and embodiment theory, were developed in an interdisciplinary fashion - with significant participation of philosophy - to explain cognitive phenomena. The different theoretical approaches allowed by the 4E spectrum are accompanied by a variety of empirical methods as well as different demands on possible explanations of cognitive phenomena.

The main task of the PSC is the systematic compilation as well as the evaluation of the methods applied in 4E research from a perspective of philosophy of science. The aim of the project is to develop a comprehensive methodology of 4E research. This requires the analysis of philosophical foundations, types of explanations, methodological contexts and the methodological means by which research on "situated cognition" can be realized and coordinated in an interdisciplinary manner. The PSC contains descriptive parts describing what researchers do in the 4E context as well as normative elements describing what they could change to improve their research.

Office, workstation, and travel budget (for the research group) will be provided.

Duties:

· Realization of a doctoral thesis in the context of the project – broadly understood (Philosophy of science, 4E theories, philosophy of mind)

· Support the development of applications for third party funding

· Support the organisation of workshops and conferences

· Teaching duties of one course per semester (in German or English, experience in teaching is not obligatory)

· Administrative tasks in the self-administration of the research project

These tasks are structured and discussed within the project and, where necessary, carried out cooperatively.

Profile:

· University degree in Philosophy (B.A. and M.A.).

· Ideally, the candidate has knowledge in philosophy of science (theory of explanation) as well as situated cognition research (enacted/extended/embedded/embodied mind)

· Applications from candidates from psychology, cognitive science or science and technology research will also be considered if they have a good knowledge of and are interested in the debate of "situated cognition".

· The candidate seeks a doctorate in philosophy.

· Since this is a junior research group project, the ability to work in a team is an important prerequisite for successful participation in the project.

· Experience in university teaching is desirable but not necessary.

· The candidate should be able to join weekly meetings (research colloquium) to be part of the academic environment and to get support for her/his own research.

Please supplement your usual application documents with a short written sample (e.g. introduction of the Master's thesis, exposé of the planned PhD thesis (1-10 pages)).
