Frostbite's Official Statement Regarding the MVD/Ryuga Bracket Situation
Tonight, towards the end of our Phase 2 K wave, a match between MVD and Ryuga was improperly assigned to a stage setup as preparations for the North America versus Japan Crew Battle were set to begin. This set was interrupted and moved before Game 1 began, and the players began playing on an off-stream setup. During Game 2, MVD unplugged his controller and informed an event staff member that he was forfeiting the match as a result of the changes in lighting and the growing crowd noise from crew battle preparation.
By all accounts, a player unplugging a controller mid-game and standing up is understood as a set forfeit. Unfortunately, a core staff member made a comment that contradicted this, suggesting that Ryuga and MVD might replay their set; this was seen as an official ruling by both players, and we regret this error. After collecting perspectives from all parties present, the full Frostbite staff has decided to follow the original ruling, and Ryuga will continue in Winners Top 48 with MVD in losers.
Collectively, the Frostbite core staff regret this turn of events immensely, both for the difficult conditions we required both players to play in and for the confusion that followed the forfeit. We are deeply, truly sorry, and, as an organization that is committed to learning from its mistakes, we accept the criticism levied at us as an opportunity for growth.
