Explaining the upd8 project to the English-speaking VTuber community.

Hi everyone, this is Otonashi Rhythm of upd8.

As reported by platforms such as PANORA, upd8 is a project started by Activ8, the company that manages Kizuna AI. This is the first time their involvement has been made public.

First of all, I believe there may be some initial confusion in the English-speaking world that I’d like to clear up right away.

upd8 is a project that Virtual Talents participate in. They are NOT our producers, it is NOT a company affiliation like the several corporate Virtual YouTuber groups we know.

The upd8 project supports not only Virtual YouTubers but rather “Virtual Talent” (e.g. gamers, singers, actors, and so on) with their experience and contacts in the industry. Their support may include managing appearances in events and TV shows, collaborations, information exchange (for instance concerning VR technology), legal support, job/sponsorship offers, promotion (including overseas)…and such!

Independent Virtual Talents participating in the upd8 project continue to freely create their own content on whatever platforms they prefer at their own pace. That is all there is to it. There is no participation fee; however, the upd8 project will take a part of your earnings (e.g. from sponsorship offers they provide) to continue investing in the platform and providing support for everyone. This is common and necessary on any creator platform, so no surprise here.

You do not have to be Japanese or a resident of Japan to apply for the project. Right now the website is only available in Japanese but Activ8 is very invested in reaching out to an international audience. In fact…it’s a big part of why I became a member!

Like I’ve been saying from the start, I’m aiming for big things but I also want to just sit back and do fun gaming streams and such here and there… So please forgive me if not everything I do is as big as today’s announcement.

However, one thing remains true no matter what I do: I want to hear everyone’s voices!

So please do share your thoughts on upd8 and I will do my best to answer any questions that you have and convey your opinions and ideas to the project staff.

Thank you so much, and never forget that the most important German word is “Scheiße.”
