Two Things

Two Things

There’s a scene in the film “A Hard Days Night” when George Harrison accidentally wanders into a ‘Swinging London’ ad-agency and finds a pompous executive preening for a couple of fashion models. Oblivious to the fact that the young man standing in the doorway is a world-famous rock and roll star, the ad-exec drags the musician into his office, shoves him into a chair and makes a big to-do out of soliciting his opinion on a new clothing line that the exec is overly confident will be the next teen-rage. If you will allow me to use British slang, with droll precision the quiet Beatle proceeds to “take the piss out of the pretentious twit,” and if I remember correctly, dismisses the ad-campaign as “barmy,” pronounces the clothes “grotty,” and leaves the pompous exec not knowing what just happened. Oh, the beauty of speaking truth to bluster. It’s my favorite scene in the movie.

In case you’re a fan of the music I make (or the one book I’ve written) and are wondering how and what I’m doing, here’s the skinny: I’m working on getting well. You can look up autonomic dysfunction, or dysautonomia, the diagnosis I was finally given for the wacky symptoms I’ve experienced since the summer of 2014, but I’d advise you not to bother. It’s more or less everything the medical community can’t readily prescribe medicine for.

In my case, a fine doctor figured out that my parasympathetic nervous system had gone to war with the sympathetic nervous system which put my right-heavy brain in the tricky position of trying to figure out what to do with, and for, itself. Add a couple of herniated lumbar discs to the mix and voila’ - physical and mental train-wreck.

Luckily, it seems there is a cure. I’m in the care of an excellent functional neurologist whose outside the box approach to human anatomy has me convinced the worst is over. Come the new year, I plan to be back in the flow. As of today, the signs are very good that I will be. In the meantime, happy Halloween.

Yours on the sidelines,
Rodney
