Please consider liking and retweeting this post as I want to spread my word to the Hearthstone Developers which is tough being a small player without a name.
First of all to start this post I have to clarify some points:
1. I usually never tilt about Hearthstone and am very aware that Random generated effects are a very high factor in the game, which is a fact that I do not want to complain about. I would have made this blogpost even if I would have won the match.
2. I have very high rescpect for all Hearthstone Game Developers and the work that they put into the game and its balance. Unlike most of the Hearthstone community I am very satisfied with the balance that the game is at right now and recognize that it is the result of the hard work the developers and designers put into the game.
3. I have read and watched the recent developer update about Game mechanic changes (http://www.hearthpwn.com/news/3426-hearthstone-patch-9-2-trigger-changes-synergy) and I am aware of how the new order of spell-casting and trigger effects along the three basic zones (board, hand and deck) work.
Now to start:
I was playing a bo5 series on strivewire (https://strivewire.com/tournament/30092/match/937316) in a 15€ buy-in tournament for a total prize-pool of 432€. It was 1-1 tied and I still had to win with Hunter and Paladin, versus my opponents Druid and Mage. In this 3rd game I was plaing Paladin versus his Druid, which I felt favoured in, so I only had to win with Hunter afterwards. However in that game of Paladin versus Druid, which i luckily could manage to upload the replay on hearthstone decktracker (https://hsreplay.net/replay/WH6e2EcEbsqdzXxvRuJwtN), a bug occured due to the new game mechanic changes.
As you can see on my opponents turn 6 he casted Ultimate Infestation on my Finja, the Flying Star as I had 7 minions on board (including Finja) and I had the secret Redemption up. As Redemption reads "When a friendly minion dies, return it to life with 1 Health" and my Finja died on my opponent's turn, it should usually be resummoned since after the initial Finja's death there was only 6 minions on the board. However in that scenario Redemption did NOT trigger despite Finja dying. Before I will talk why this possibly happened I wanna talk about the state of the game that could have been IF Redemption actually triggered. In that scenario I had 6 minions on board + the theoretical Finja, 4 of those minions being Murlocs with a total of 9 attack. Meanwhile in my deck there were only 5 Murlocs left, 2 of those being Murloc Warleaders and in my hand I had a Blessing of Kings. As I would have traded away my 2 non-Murloc minions and triggered the Finja's "Summon from your deck effect" on my opponents Ghoul Infestor I had a f(n, k, p) = f(2, 5, 2/5) = 3,456 · 10^-1 (0.3456) (binomial coefficient) chance of pulling both Murloc Warleaders which would have given me 16 extra damage. That along side my 9+2 Minion damage plus the 4 damage from Blessing of Kings would have been 31 lethal damage versus a druid at 27 health. If I would have pulled only 1 Warleader I still had a total of 23 burst damage which, despite my opponent having the saving Spreading Plague, most likely would still have won me the game long-term. Due to the fact that Redemption did not trigger you can see that my opponent just overran me with Spreading Plague followed by minion generation. In the next game I managed to win with my Midrange-Hunter versus his Control Mage (I lost the final game of Paladin versus Control Mage), which means that if I would have won the Paladin game prior, I would have won the whole match.
Now I can try to explain why this "bug" happened. As you can see in the update video (https://youtu.be/3nJDHtyh7PU?t=250) Josh Durica explains that "before activating any trigger" all three zones are being checked including the board state. In my case that means while Finja was dying during the spell-cast of Ultimate Infestation the trigger-effect of Redemption ("WHEN a minion dies...") was checking for the board state which considered the dying Finja still as a living minion adding to the maximal board count of 7 minions. Therefore the spell Redemption could not activate the summoning of an extra minion (the Finja with 1 health) as the game thought that the board was full. Players know a similar effect with the secret Noble Sacrifice as it also can't trigger as long as you have the maximum amount of 7 minions. However I am pretty sure that the effect of Redemption being prevented by a maximum minion count is a new update which is not working as intended. I think it's in the nature of the card Redemption to revive a minion after it's death, instead of considering it alive while it dies (?) :D. My suggestion is to change the wording on the card to "AFTER a friendly minion dies..." as it makes most sense to revive a minion after its death and not while it is dying.
After losing the match I felt really furious at first, hoping for Blizzard to pay me back my 15€ :D. But I have kind of calmed down now and just want to spread the word, hoping for a response/statement of the Hearthstone Development Team.
