KUALA LUMPUR – The Merdeka Day video, ‘Citizens’, was intended to call upon the people to give their support towards the government en route to becoming a strong nation, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.
Liow, who is the main actor in the video, stressed that the video does not mean to tarnish the image of the Chinese community nor was it meant to portray the community as a group that does not love the country.
“The video was intended to call for the people to give their utmost support and love towards the government because it is only with their support that we can become a strong government en route to becoming a strong nation,” Liow said on the sidelines of the second China-Malaysia Port Alliance Annual Meeting at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
Liow was commenting on claims by opposition leaders that the “Citizen” video has tarnished the image of the Chinese community as it potrays them as people who do not love or support the country.
He further asserted that the government truly understands the feelings of the community and people and is trying its best to rectify all weaknesses.
“Overall the video is still a positive video with good vibes because whatever is reflected in the video shows the strength of the country, we want the people to love this country. Hence, let us all move forward,” Liow said.
In his opening remarks, Liow revealed that five new ports from Malaysia and China would be part of the China-Malaysia Port Alliance.
The five are Kemaman Port Authority (Malaysia), Sabah Port Authority (Malaysia), Kuching Port Authority (Malaysia), Qingdao Port (China) and Tianjin Port (China).
He said that the formation of this Port Alliance between the two nations is intended to pave the way for cooperation in various disciplines including port studies, training and apprenticeship, technical assistance, exchange of information and traffic development, as well as the promotion of trade services between ports.
“China has the best ports in the world and this cooperation will pave the way for a brighter future for both countries in leveraging on the people’s potential and resources,” he added.
Liow then revealed that Malaysia will be putting forward a few initiatives such as assisting Malaysian ports to emerge as leading entities in the Asean region, since the country was the earliest supporter of China’s One Belt and One Road initiative.
“The initiative will without a doubt open new frontiers and provide opportunities for both countries in terms of the logistics sector,” he said.
