When David Cook took home the top spot in season seven of “American Idol,” it was the signifier of a changing tide.

That’s because he was the first winner to have an alternative rock background. His raspy vocals didn’t quite fit the classic pop sound the judges, and audience, usually went for.

The Missouri-born singer had the talent to nab the number one spot, but the later winners of the reality singing competition would definitely try to capture the same magic Cook easily showed during his tenure on the show.

In the years since his “Idol” heyday, Cook has been recording as much music as he can. That has always been his passion and he wants to continue sharing music with the world.
Now, he’s touring the states and will perform at Greeley, Colorado’s Moxi Theater next Friday night.

“I’m doing the four-piece pop-rock thing with my band,” Cook said. “We’ll play quite a bit of my back catalog, but I’m currently testing out some new songs I’ve written for an EP I’m working on. We tailor each and every show to the city we’re in, so that makes it more fun for us and the audience.”

There is quite a bit of audience interaction at Cook’s shows, for those who are looking to get a little more up close and personal with the singer. Cook wants to do this with his fans because it gives them an opportunity to come away from a concert seeing a new side of him and his band.
While Cook was propelled to fame in 2008 when he was first seen auditioning for “American Idol,” that wasn’t his first go at show business.

He began performing as child and learned to play guitar when he was 13. He left his home in the suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri to head to Oklahoma to purse music full-time after college.
Cook formed a band and released three independent albums with them. But, he was still writing solo music on the side, releasing his debut record, “Analog Heart,” in 2006.

In the summer of 2007, though, everything began to change for Cook. He went to the “American Idol” auditions to support his younger brother, who was trying out.

Cook had no intention to get in the front of the judges and cameras, but when a show producer noticed him in the crowd, his family encouraged to him to audition. He sang “Livin’ On a Prayer” and was immediately given a golden ticket to Hollywood.

On May 21, 2008, he was crowned the show’s newest winner, beating out runner-up David Archuleta with 12 million votes.

He released his second album later that year, with two hit singles: “Come Back to Me” and “Light On,” the latter of which was co-written Chris Cornell.

Three years later, Cook dropped his third record, “This Loud Morning.” He worked with a number of famous songwriters, including the Goo Goo Dolls’ Johnny Rzeznik and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.

Now, he’s broken away from the major labels and gone back to his independent roots. His fourth album, “Digital Vein” was released in 2015. Cook is writing and fine-tuning his EP, which doesn’t have a name or release date quite yet. He is hoping to announce both of those soon.

“It took me four years to put out ‘Digital Vein’ and I promised my fans I wouldn’t make them wait that long again for new music,” he said. “The songs I’ve written for this are probably the strongest ones I’ve ever done. I’m nervous about what people think of it, but I’m excited to take this journey.”
