Starcraft personalities returning to BW:R
I'm kinda sad that I feel like I need to discuss this but I do.
Let me first say I know this isn't directed at "All BW fans" or anyone but there IS a large group of people that for a few months now have been posting on TL.net, Reddit and stream channels in a really strange way.. they are die hard BW fans and they are mad at SC2 fans in some way? I don't care to dive deeply into the WHY because it is irrelevant. I am also not delusional and I am aware that some of that angst is being generated by SC2 fans as well.. I am not here to defend/attack one side or the other.
If you love Starcraft be it Broodwar or SC2.. be proud, excited, happy and jazzed that people are excited about BW:R. I don't care if you've been playing since 1998 or 2017. If you've stuck around and only played BW that is really cool. Be welcoming, excited and happy that more attention is coming to the game you love.
Day9 making content and being jazzed about doing BW stuff is NOT a cash grab. Nobody disputes his love for the game. You want the cold hard truth? I can speak personally but it's a safe bet something along these lines is true for Day9, Artosis, Tasteless etc..
BW was our first love. This game was in our dreams at night and on our fingertips during the day. We played for no money or very little. In different ways each of us took it to the next level. Day9 made his dailies which launched his career, Nick/Dan gambled and went to korea sleeping in closets and on floors while they built a career and I traveled the country / went on a reality show which launched MY career getting me on to Evil Geniuses. When SC2 came out that escalation continued. It was the biggest esport and it allowed us to take our BW built careers and elevate that.. so we did. Cash out? I guess? I hope some day you get the blessing of doing something you love and then having that thing open doors for you and create opportunities to grow. Nick/Dan are two of the most premier commentators in gaming. Sean has one of the most successful streaming careers in the world and I've had my successes as well. This idea that any of this happened as a slight to BW or something is applying awfully negative connotations to something that really becomes about YOU really quick. If you are mad, sad or think down of any of us because of this pathway I feel sorry for you. I also ask that you question that feeling in the interest of becoming a better representative of a community I STILL deeply care about: BW. That scene is tiny and could use some love.. if you alienate and mistreat people as they want to come back be it Day9 or Joeblow1212 you are doing a serious disservice to the thing you supposedly love.
If you stuck around BW from the beginning or whatever be PROUD of that and use it as something to wield like a beacon or a torch for the community. Do not think that your job is to make others feel bad for coming in etc.. it's dumb.
The final cold hard truth is this probably won't last. Day9 will return to making content for Hearthstone or Dota2.. if he does will you get mad at him? I hope not.. gaming is awesome and should be something we do because we love it. If you think someone has to be anchored to a game forever and if they do anything else OR GOD FORBID GET PAID FOR IT you will hate them ... man, that is rough.
I'm excited to play BW:R. I haven't touched BW until now because SC2 has been my focus. BW gave me everything and I love it for that but I am 31 and I have to pay the bills. My goal is to do what I love while making a living.. so far mission accomplished. With BW:R I have the opportunity to stream it and make some content while continuing to earn a living. If that angers you then avoid my stuff. If you can wrap your head around that balance I hope to see you!
