The Department of Philosophy of the University of Twente in the Netherlands is hereby soliciting applications for


Short-term postdoc appointments (2 months, full-time)

in ethics, with a focus on technology



Appointment period: July 15th or August 1st, 2016
to September 15th or October 1st, 2016.

We are offering two competitive appointments at our department to do research in ethics of technology and prepare and submit a MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE individual fellowship proposal which, if successful, can be carried out at our department.


About the department

The department of philosophy (https://www.utwente.nl/bms/wijsb/) is internationally leading in the philosophy and ethics of technology. At a recent research evaluation of philosophy programs in the Netherlands, it ranked highest in the area of ethics and practical philosophy. The department currently includes eight tenured/tenure-track staff members, three postdocs, ten PhD students, and several part-time faculty. The department participates in and directs the interuniversity 3TU.Center for Ethics and Technology (www.ethicsandtechnology.eu). Both the department and the Center have a strong international orientation and include members from many different nationalities. The department’s research has a strong focus on ethics of emerging technologies (including ICT and robotics, biomedical and neurotechnologies and environmental technologies), and the philosophy and ethics of human-technology relations, amongst other topics.


The Challenge

You spend two months with us to get acquainted with the department and engage in research, culminating in a proposal for a two-year MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE fellowship with a focus on ethics and technology (deadline: September 14th, 2016;

Please take into account that part of your appointment period will be during the summer, when it is quiet at the department. However, there will be senior people around to help you with the proposal.


Offer
You are appointed as a postdoc (full-time) for a two-month period, starting date: July 15th or August 1st, ending date: September 15th or October 1st.
The salary amounts to € 3044,- gross monthly with a maximum to € 4654,- depending on experience. Additionally, the University of Twente provides excellent facilities for professional and personal development, a holiday allowance (amounts to 8%) and an end-of-year bonus (amounts to 8.3%), and a number of additional benefits.

Your profile

You hold a Ph.D. in philosophy, preferably with a specialization in ethics or social / political philosophy. You have either had a focus on technology in your past research or you have a demonstrable interest in focusing on technology for your future research. You already have a strong list of publications in peer-refereed journals, and have relevant international experience. You have a strong command of the English language. You are not a resident of the Netherlands. You have basic familiarity with the MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE individual grant scheme and are willing and able to carry out the grant at the University of Twente, if successful in your application.
