Explanation and evidence of mechanisms across the sciences

Monday 16 May 2016, 9am - 5pm, KLT 2, University of Kent, University Rd, Canterbury CT2 7NP.

Mechanism-based accounts of scientific discovery, explanation, and metaphysics have recently become very popular in philosophy of science. These accounts are based on close examination of scientific practice rather than abstract theorizing from philosophical first principles, and the analyses they provide are often tailored to fit their primary source material, usually the molecular life sciences. Comparatively little attention has been given to questions of whether the norms of evaluating mechanistic evidence and explanations are (or should be) similar across diverse mechanistic research programs, and whether the proposed metaphysics of mechanisms are adequate to support the evidential and explanatory roles of mechanisms across the sciences. This workshop will focus on these and related questions in an intense one day setting.
