My thoughts after seeing the film "Equals"

There are few movies that evoke a multitude of emotions, whether it be the ups,the downs, or the complexities. Movies like that stick with you,and give you the impetus to think,to reflect, and to deconstruct in order to find even more layers to delve into. "Equals" is such a film. It runs the gamut of the highs and lows of personal interactions and relationships. Drake Doremus creates a magnificent canvas using minimalism in the starkness of the buildings, clothing, and gestures to evoke the sense of detachment and apathy;while at the same time engendering a sense of hope, discovery, and strong emotional connections in the greenspaces, the warmth of the sun,and again, the use of gestures to evoke a sense of belonging, and of love. Love,in this film is both necessary and tangible but also forbidden. The push and pull of both is demonstrated so brilliantly in the performances of Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult. There are a wealth of emotions that shine through the surface of Ms. Stewart's eyes, even though her character of Nia is supposed to remain detached and apathetic. It's just mesmerizing, and also profound to see the depth of emotion conveyed by just her eyes. Mr. Hoult is also a very emotive actor, and his reactive gestures as the character Silas, demonstrate how the constrictive suppression of emotion takes it's toll. Also superb are the understated, but omnipresent Jonas and Bess, portrayed by the phenomenal Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver, the "Animal Kingdom" alumnus. By understated,I mean, while they are not the central focus,Jonas and Bess are,in a sense,a sort of anchor point for both Silas and Nia. This film is introspective, and very sad at times, but again, there's always that current of hope that runs through it. Love and life are complex, and "Equals" is a beautiful, yet also deeply reflective study of both.
