For better or worse, we all – – especially children – – get the lion's share of our information about our culture from our entertainment. The manner in which we are to behave, our expected shapes and boundaries, and the social molds into which we are to pour ourselves are found most often in our films. And so I can't help thinking about the women of tomorrow who are but young girls today. Young girls who are settling into seats in pitch dark theaters and rather than just seeing Luke Skywalker and Han Solo swaggering atop the celluloid, are witnessing Rey battle Kylo Ren with a lightsaber in her hand, or Jyn Erso leading men into the fray while clutching a smoking blaster. These are subtle but powerful images, and they lodge deep in young brains, powering dreams and informing destinies.
