@VGBC_GimR is wrong about Miis and here's why.

This is a response to GimR's recent video "The Case for Legalizing "Custom Miis" - By GimR" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkkX3P0I5sY&feature=youtu.be&a
Watch the video if you haven't already done so.

In the Smash scene, I'm a nobody. I'm a decent Rosalina player from the Central Pennsylvania region. I don't have the influence of GimR and so this may only be read by like 10 people. However, I still want to respond to his video because I care about our rules being fair in tournament and I don't think they should be determined by a vocal minority (not actually sure how much of a minority Mii supporters are, but the vocal part is the important part) or by insufficient arguments. I'm going to go through the points GimR makes one by one and address them.

0. Every character has access to their full movesets except Mii Fighters.

Incorrect. Customs for all fighters are currently banned. GimR obviously meant something like "Every character has access to their non-custom movesets except Mii Fighters." but that obviously feels like a much weaker statement, doesn't it? We're already banning the non-1111 moves of all the other characters and as such they do not have access to their full movesets.

1a. Definition of Customs Part 1: A derivative of an original special move.
This is the first of three parts of GimR's definition of Customs and I think it's clear that they're specially worded around his conclusion. He's defining customs with the goal of Miis having a clear. This first part of the definition GimR puts forth is arbitrary and shallow. It is arbitrary in the sense that he's saying it must be a derivative, or based on the original special move. Mario's custom fireballs are still fireballs, they just behave different. Mii Brawler's neutral B isn't just a derivative of the shot put, therefore Mii Brawler's neutral B moves aren't custom. There's no reason a custom move has to be based on the original special move to be considered a custom.

It's also shallow because it this derivation on an original move is for the most part cosmetic in GimR's argument. Mario's fast fireball is just a faster fireball than Mario's that moves in a straight line. Not a different move, but just a variation on his fireball right? Wrong. As GimR should know from being in the Smash scene for so long, there are many traits that define a move. How much damage does it do? What's the hitbox? How much hitstun does it put the opponent in? How much startup and endlag does it have? These are some of the characteristics that define a move and subtle changes to them can change everything about a move. Let's look at Rosalina & Luma. Rosalina's original Side-B is the Star Bits. Luma shoots out a bunch of close range star bits that cover roughly 1.5-2 character lengths in distance. One of Rosalina's custom Side-B moves shoots a single star bit across the stage and it covers roughly the distance of Final Destination from what I remember. It's still just Luma shooting a star bit, but they are completely different moves. They have completely different utility and coverage and they're not used in the same situation. Rosalina would be a different character if she had the move instead. She'd be able to harass with a projectile from far away, something she is not able to do with her original Side-B. This is a "derivative" of an original move that is CLEARLY a custom move and is agreed upon by everyone to be a custom move.

It doesn't matter how cosmetically similar custom moves are, changing their characteristics the way other characters' custom moves are changes the moves enough to be different.

1b. Definition of Customs Part 2: A custom must be unlocked.
GimR theorizes that Miis were the only ones originally designed to be planned and thinks of some discussion Sakurai had with the developers and says how he thinks the rest of the cast's custom moves are clearly rushed. Sakurai is apparently ashamed of these moves and makes them unlockable instead of available from the beginning. They must be unlocked in the least-played mode (single player) and must be grinded in order to completely collect them all. This is apparently evidence that Sakurai is not proud of these moves and somehow is justification for why a custom move must be unlocked instead of available at the start.

This is all based on GimR's fan-theory on the behind-the-scenes development of the game and isn't actually an argument at all. It's an opinion justified by an opinion on Sakurai's opinion of the game during development.

1c. Definition of Customs Part 3: A Custom Move can't be accessed unless "Custom Fighters" is on.

This argument has been around since the beginning of these discussions. It implicitly asserts a definition (which is completely different from the one GimR proposed, mind you) that is held by the game. According to the game, a "Custom Fighter" is any non-Mii with any non-1111 moveset. Sure, a possible explanation for this could be that due to the fact that Miis must first be created manually in order to show up on the CSS and toggling "Custom Fighters" off and on may make the character un-choosable. However, there's a simpler way to address this argument.

So what? There are many things the game defines that we do not abide by. When the game goes to time, we don't play out sudden death like the game says. We define our rules and play by them. If the game disagrees with us, the game is wrong. We set rules in order to dictate how we must win, what modes to play on, what stages we can choose, and even in certain iterations of smash ways that we CAN'T use our moves during the game. We implement these rules as a way to make the game consistent and fair for all players.

2. The Nintendo Direct explanation of Mii Fighters says you'd need 9 regular fighters to match the number of moves the Mii Fighters can use.

This is another case of "So What?" because that same statement can be used to describe custom moves as well. The video was presenting how Mii Fighters work since they're clearly out of the norm from how characters normally work. This does not mean Nintendo intended for their moves to be not the same as other characters customs as well. As it so happens, it would take 3 fighters to match the moves Palutena can use. So what?

3. Every character has a special trait and the Mii's is using 12 moves.

Peach can float, Mac has KO. Mario has... fireball? Ganon has... choke? Not every character has a crazy gimmick. There are plenty of characters that are very straightforward. Being able to do something crazy does not mean that it should be legal in tournament play. Every single character has a multitude of things that are unique to them. Mario has his specific fireball, he has fludd, he has his Up B. Mii Brawler has his shot put and whatever his other 1111 moves. Being able to use more than the normal 1111 isn't the only thing that differentiates them from the other fighters. This is merely an opinion of GimR's and is not actually an argument for anything.

Let's restate GimR's complete definition of customs:
1. Must be unlocked
2. Must be a derivative of an original move
3. Must be only accessible with "custom fighters" set to on.

According to GimR, if a character meets 2 out of the 3, then it is a custom character.

Why 2 out of 3? That seems kind of arbitrary doesn't it? There's a specific reason for that. GimR says 2 out of 3 in order to exclude Palutena from the list of not-really-customs. Palutena's customs don't have to be unlocked and they're not "derivatives" of her normal special moves. However, GimR needs to exclude Palutena from the list and this is his way of doing it.

This video should be titled "Ways Mii Fighters Are Different From The Rest Of The Cast (Also Not Like Palutena, I Swear)" because that's all it was.

GimR isn't correct just because he's GIMR. Being a popular figurehead in the community does mean that you're right on everything. When you look at GimR's arguments, they're flimsy and don't actually prove a SINGLE THING.

John Numbers and Dapuffster did a better job trying to justify Miis even though I disagree with them as well.

Thank you for getting this far,
