So you want to Meshnet? Well, look no further to get your feet wet since you are probably going to be swimming in meshnets in the near future due to where the internet is going.
First of all, get I2P. TOR can no longer be trusted due to who they accept as devs and their whole government background and their ties with the social justice clique who seem to have no problem with pedophiles but jump at stabbing their userbase in the back when it comes to phantom "internet bullying". Start by downloading I2P. You should probably get used to I2P first before anything else so here is your starter guide to that.
I2P Security - https://www.bestvpn.com/blog/8363/use-i2p-idiots-starting-guide/
Step 1: Go here https://geti2p.net/en/download
Step 2: Download the version for your OS. I highly reccomend using Linux and not OS X or Windows.
Step 3: Download a browser separate from your daily use browser. Pale moon is another good alternative as FireFox can no longer be trusted for the same reason as TOR and with the added headache of all their Google integration.

Step 4: Menu button > Preferences > Advanced > Network tab > Connection category > settings button.
Step 5: Configure like so. 127.0.0.1 for http proxy port 4444, no proxy for localhost, 127.0.0.1
Step 6: Start your I2P router and pop open http://127.0.0.1:7657/home in your browser.
By now you will be noticing that I2P like the TOR network is very slow compared to the internet. This is normal, but there are also ways to speed up this process.

After reading through the above tutorial I am sure you are worried about bandwidth as well. Well never fear. There are ways to help with that as well. Some methods being easier than one might think.

Now that some of the obvious questions are out of the way, lets get you more familiar with I2P and its features.

Now at this point you are probably worried about communication and so on. The internet was built with a backbone of communication in mind after all. I2P Bote has your back. Find out more below.

Now it is time to talk about I2P servers, eepsites and SSH. Below are tutorials and walkthroughs to help you understand the basics and get the most out of I2P.

Now that you are more familiar with I2P, it is time to get to the meshnet portion of this and surprisingly, the most important part is one of he easiest.

Byzantium is your doorway to the mesh net and made with such simplicity that even the technologically illiterate should not have much trouble with it. But you must be warned, for a meshnet to be more stable and function properly, you need others in the area to be using it as well as it is ad-hoc. The network is less like a web and is more akin to a chain now and everyone is a single link. The chain only expands for as many links it has. Freifunk uses this same method and it is highly successful.

Now at this point one of your main concerns will be the reach of your signal. Once again, there are walkthroughs and suggestions to help you.

At this point you should focus on Browser safety before jumping into bigger projects with this because just like TOR, your security can be easily compromised through your browser.

For further security in terms of browsers, applications and addons, you can review an older posting of mine about the same issue at hand as it covers security and safety far more in depth.

And there you have it. Your basic Meshnet rig is ready for you to enjoy. Of course there are more advanced things to have fun with, but for now enjoy what you have and get a feel for it so you don't get too far in and end up making a mess for yourself. And of course, don't forget to tell your friends and family about said methods. when implemented properly, you can find yourself saving a ton on internet services.
Have fun.
