From speech of Amar Bakdash, Syrian CP, at the Anti-Imperialist Meeting, Athens

[...] Syrian communists, alongside other patriotic forces in Syria, are resisting the savage attack of imperialists and their collaborators against our country, and believe this is not only their patriotic and class duty, but also their internationalist duty. Because at this moment, Syria is in the front line of the conflict between global imperialism and the global liberation forces.

One of the main motives for the hatred of imperialism and global Zionism against Syria is its historically stable stance in resisting imperialist schemes in the region, as well as its support for national liberation movements that face imperialist aggression. Syria consistently rejected the the plan for a "great New Middle East" that aimed at instituting full zionist imperialist hegemony in our region. The Syrian CP had called this plan "Great Zion." And it is indeed that, because it aims to extend the hegemony of Zionist Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean, with the blessings and under the auspices of American imperialism. The success of this dangerous colonial plot presupposes the fragmentation and division of the states of the region, so that the situation is transformed into the "creative chaos" of imperialism's theoreticians, that is, into the creation of tragedy for the peoples of the region, murder, displacement, immiseration, so that imperialists can dominate and plunder these peoples.

Imperialists have not forgiven Syria for its support to the just struggle of the Palestinian people for its rights. They have not forgiven Syria for supporting the Iraqi resistance against US invasion, this brave resistance that rubbed on the conqueror's face the mud caused by the first serious military deeat of the US after the victory of the Vietnamese people.

[...] Global imperialism wants to overturn the patriotic position of Syria, using, in its aggressive plots, loyal and dependent states of the regions, of which Turkey, the infected fingernail of NATO, is the most aggressive, but also the absolutist monarchist regimes of the Gulf States: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and others. One of the most savage tools imperialism is using are organizations using a religious mantle, which pursue the institution of medieval regimes to serve the hegemony of imperialism and Zionism.

Dear comrades,

We, Syrian communists, have defined our position regarding any political force, person or regime in relation to their position toward US imperialism. For us, the most dangerous enemy the people face is US imperialism, the frontline of global imperialism.

There is no doubt that European imperialism is in solidarity to the aggressive policy of US imperialism, as was evident and continues to be evident from events in North Africa (particularly Libya), the Ukrainian crisis and the conflict in the Eastern Mediterranean, where the forces of Old Europe have sent military units to combat the direct Russian military intervention, which took place in response to a demand of the Syrian government.

We think we must take advantage of all efforts made to combat the aggression of American imperialism. The national liberation movement must take advantage of the sharpening of conflicts between global centers of power.

Our party, the Syrian CP, believes that the Russian intervention, including Russian military intervention, plays an important role for Syrian resistance against the savage aggression of Euroatlantic imperialism. We are fully aware that contemporary Russia is not the Soviet Union, which was a stable frontline for the liberation of peoples. However, Russia is the recipient of a great deal of pressure from the expansionist policy of US and of west European imperialism.
