COMPLAINT TO IPSO - DAILY MAIL ARTICLE RE: TOM WATSON/UNCLE

On 11th October the Daily Mail published a story "

Witch-hunter Tom Watson's uncle is a child abuser: Scoutmaster was jailed for sex attacks on a nine-year-old boy

This article is erroneous - Peter Halliwel is NOT Tom Watson's Uncle. He is the brother of Tom Watson's mother's 2nd husband

Tom Watson's parents divorced when he was 30 yrs old. His mother went on to marry for a 2nd time. Peter Halliwell is the brother of her 2nd husband and NOTHING to do with Tom Watson MP.

In no way can Peter Halliwell be described as an UNCLE of Tom Watson.

Nor should the Daily Mail suggest that Tom Watson is a 'witch-hunter'. This term has historical references which are totally unacceptable in today's society.

"But he has chosen never to speak of the crimes of his uncle" suggests that the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party has acted covertly and disingenuously. This is not true. Tom Watson MP was the first MP to stand up in the house of commons and ask for a national inquiry into child abuse that may include a 'Westminster Ring'.

I ask that you investigate Simon Murphy and Ross Slater (authors of the Daily Mail article) and require them to retract their erroneous article, apologise to Tom Watson and pay a small sum of money to a charity of Tom Watson's choice.

Thank you

NB: I have spoken to The Daily Mail by phone and the call centre refuses to put me through to anyone in authority. I cannot give you the name of the person I spoke to as she refused to give it to me. The female call-centre person on the switchboard told me that she deals with 6 newspapers and she has no knowledge about what is printed in them all. This is not acceptable when IPSO requires complainants to have first contacted the publication.
