REMINDER! #CollegeMedia chat, 7 p.m. eastern Sunday, Oct. 4!

On the agenda this week:

- In wake of tragedy (like what occurred yesterday at UCC in Oregon), is crowdsourcing via social media to reach out to victims, families, etc., over the line? Or is it merely the 21st-century method of going door-to-door for comment? How about the student experience with asking personal or tough questions in general? How do students get over that initial fear/reluctance? Also, of course, what to do with the issue of “naming” the perpetrator of such heinous acts…

- What value should metrics play in newsroom decision-making? Should it have a role in what a college media outlet covers, and how to cover it? How far is too far in terms of rewarding student journalists for reaching high output/reach?

- Taking a cue from the CMA listserv discussion this week on the role of an adviser, how far is too far for an adviser? How much input should an adviser have on story generation and actual content? Does it matter if the students asked for help, or is a line still being crossed?

- On a related note, The Atlantic asked this week: “Can College Journalism survive public relations?” The piece, which talked at length about Loni McKown and gave the entire rundown of what’s happened (happening?) at Butler and elsewhere (http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2015/09/the-plot-against-student-newspapers/408106/) begs the question of what college news outlets are doing to fight for freedom on campus.

- We’re also currently developing a few questions relevant to the topic of diversity within college (or pro…) media, and the Wesleyan (Mass.) situation as well…

Please join us, and DO TELL SHARE WITH YOUR STUDENTS, PLEASE! While we love the advisers joining in, students are the lifeblood of what we do. We need more student input…

ALSO… if you have a question you’d like us to ask at a future chat, please email me at bfera@email.arizona.edu or find myself (@brettfera) or Candace Baltz of Oregon State (@CandaceBaltz) on Twitter
