Kristen Stewart, the sublime heroine of an impossible love story.

Her performance in the futuristic thriller Equals will stay one of the most excellent things on this day at the Toronto Film Festival, as well as the deeply moving performances of the duo julianne Moore - Ellen Page in an engaging melodrama.

EQUALS by Drake Doremus
Did you know? One of the most beautiful love story of these past ten years never had the honor of being released in France. Its title? Like Crazy. Its director? The very talented Drake Doremus, for whom, incomprehensibly, none of his films ever had the chance of getting a release on the big screen in our country. Will EQUALS fix this injustice? Its cast (Kristen Stewart - Nicholas Hoult) could very well help that. And they would all amply deserve it.

Written by Nathan Parker (Moon), this dystopian thriller takes place in a futuristic world where emotions are considered as a possible threat, and are therefor treated as a disease and eradicated. it's inside this sanitized world that will begin a love story supposed to be impossible. But the two protagonists will do everything in their power to live that love story against all odds. You probably have to be a bit of a romantic to fully appreciate this romance in the heart of a society where most members fall into a deep, suicidal depression after trying to hide their feelings.

Doremus films everything with an infinite tactfulness, loving hands forced to simply brush against one another, feelings trying to remain hidden and which suddenly pop up, with a look or a sudden uncontrolled gesture. At this little game, Nicholas Hoult proves himself to be irreproachable, Kristen Stewart evolves, once again, at a whole other level. The subtlety of her performance and, as a matter of fact, her way of playing that character who holds back her explosive passion, raises the film at a level higher than a trite love story, in a world that reminds us a lot of 'Gattaca' (1997). This lack of originality is undeniably, the limit of EQUALS, despite a remarkable work by John Guleserian and a magnificent Score, which helps with the climax, both cold and powered up, in a love story totally different from others.
