1）Ring type
Everyone should probably know about Cartier's Love series, and this ring is from the Love series too. There's 3 rings which are similar (to what Luhan wears).

1st ring: 95% platinum gold
2nd ring: 18K white gold with a diamond

2） Dedication
Have you ever seen Luhan wear one particular ring for a long period of time? Or even seen him wear various rings before? The (only) ring that he wore for a slightly longer period of time was the MAMA era ring...

Now, as you can see from picture #1 & #2, since 141119 till today, Luhan has been seen wearing that ring for the events/cf/etc he goes to, except those filming that requests not to wear it (which will be elaborated more later).

To further prove his dedication to the ring...
He wears it to all sorts of fanmeet, award ceremonies.
He wears it to when he at the airport too.
He wears it to the rehearsal of the cctv spring festival. (OP said he most probably was asked to take it off during the actual show)
He wears it to interviews too.
He also wears it while he's filming ads for various brands (baidu maps, coach, l'oreal, puma, melishuo...)
The ring appeared in ELLE and GQ magazine cover too.
(I) especially want to talk about the GQ magazine bts. One moment you can see the ring on Luhan's right 4th finger, and the next it appears on his left middle finger.
If you think that him wearing the ring at various events is alright, but he even wore it while playing soccer!!! I was pretty shock that he wore it to play soccer, I mean should one take off all jewellery before doing sports? Aren't you afraid it'll drop off?;;;

Did you think its only us, SeLu fans, noticing the ring? There are others that noticed it too, and thought that he really was going to get married... Some media even used it to hype the public, hence, Lu-Bar posted a post which included the ring.
The post shown in the picture was posted on 141214.

The image below LuBar's post is an image of a media's report.

Usually, the staffs will take notice of what the fans do/talk about, plus with this kind of rumors around, its very likely that they know about it too. However, Luhan doesn't seem to care about those rumors and continues wearing the ring.
(Even up to here, you can't possibly think he has someone right... He's only back (in Beijing) for about a month or two, who can he find==)

3） Uniqueness
These months, he only wore this one particular ring; he has changed his watch and ear ring before. If you were to say it's an accessory, but if its an accessory it needs to be matching (to what he wears etc). However, he wears the ring no matter what events he's at and what clothes he's wearing.

Also... Luhan has another Cartier ring, its from the "Juste Unclou" series, its the needle looking ring. This ring might actually be even more expensive than the "Love" series ring. Plus, he only wore it once or twice...

4）Not responsible analysis
This is a guess (from a SeLu fan point of view) on why Luhan didnt wear the ring from the end of December till 1st Jan.
From 141125 to 150101, Sehun updated twice on instagram, in addition, its all related to the group in a whole. The second image uploaded was probably uploaded because he promised the fans to (refer to trans on the below image) In my opinion, I feel that something might have happened between this period of time.

Rough translation of the fanaccount shown in the picture:
A fan asked Sehun, "Are you in a state where you're tired of instagram already? Fans are waiting for you (to post a new picture), can you upload one soon"
Sehun smiled and said, "really? i understand~"

Whereas for Luhan, since 141219, he changed his status to invisible on weibo, which he has never done it before and many times coincidentally went on weibo the same time as Sehun.

On 2 Jan early in the morning, Luhan changed his instagram display picture and ID. He also wished everyone a happy new year.
(Everyone was saying that when Luhan reached Hong Kong, he didn't need to breach the firewall to excess instagram so he could post a greeting. However, according to recent posts, apparently Luhan knows how to get pass the firewall in China.)

On 2 Jan afternoon, Sehun posted a new weibo posted wishing everyone happy new year as well.
Here's the question, according to Sehun's habit in the past, why didn't he update on the 1 Jan when he did for instagram?

It is also after this "incident" that Luhan wore back his ring.

Hence, what I was to convey is that... one of them had a disagreement or sort, which then led to the other getting angry. And then there was a change on new years day and they made up with each other. (Just my own guessing)

5）Just some thoughts
Why previously it was the bracelet, and then a ring came out?
Guess #1: When he wears long sleeves, the bracelet isn't that visible.
Guess #2: Filming request
Guess #3: He wore the bracelet for a very long time already, plus it being similar/matching with Sehun's bracelet is making things too obvious...
Anyways... What I've mentioned before (in the previous analysis),
(You may say) Its just similar so what? What's more important for these kind of things is the sincerity of it not the accessory itself.
Also, if one day they change it, you don't have to be disappointed. You may never know, they just changed a method and we just have to believe and look out!

In conclusion, I feel that this ring is an object of trust which has got to do with Sehun.

To emphasise again, this is just my own opinion and guessing. They're not actual facts about the Cartier ring/bracelet!
