#MumiaAbuJamal's Medical Necessity (from e-mail)

To @GovernorTomWolf and (Secretary Wetzel),

I mean no disrespect to either of you, however you need to know that the medical neglect of Mumia Abu-Jamal/aka Wesley Cook (#AM 8335) is of deep concern to people around the world. As I have said previously whether due to bureaucratic/political pressures or problems within the infirmary at SCI Mahanoy, the fact remains that Mumia's medical treatment is negligent and this is a violation of the United States Constitution and Your own policies in administering medical care to Inmates. I bring your attention to the attached photo of a letter from the Honorable World-renown Social Activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa penned on April 10, 2015 to John Wetzel and the State of Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. The photo is floating around the Internet and it looks to be genuine. >> pic.twitter.com/XOqT5gljgk << The sentiments within it are echoed and mirrored by both Individuals and Organizations who fear that Mumia will die without appropriate medical treatment. This needs to seriously be considered; poorly treated Diabetes can lead to death both directly and indirectly due to other physical problems associated with Diabetes. It is very worrisome as there is no "estimate of life expectancy"; unstable Diabetes is very unpredictable. I do hear that Mumia is monitoring his glucose levels and that he is on Insulin medication, however without a Diabetic diet his condition will remain unstable. I hate to say this but if Mumia does indeed die from his current physical problems there will be an even larger public outrage then now....and it will spread throughout all Prisons, Jails, Detainment Centers, etc. You will not be able to keep this quiet because the Prison grapevines are always buzzing even without use of the Internet, media, etc, and even during lockdowns and forced solitary confinement...the word always gets out.

With cries to reduce Mass Incarceration in all forms of Prisons at the Federal and State levels along with considerations to look at necessary Prison Reform....Mumia's health has brought Medical Negligence in Prisons to the forefront of Human Right abuses prevalent within America's Penal Systems and the State of Pennsylvania and the Department of Corrections are in the spotlight. I urge you again to do what's right; my suggestion would be to grant an Executive Clemency for Mumia based on his dire health and also as reparations for violating his Constitutional, Civil, & Human Rights. I've looked at requirements for Compassionate Release in Pennsylvania and they far short of anything that resembles Compassion.

Thank You. In Peace, Bonnie F. Walker, RN, BS, LNC
