Nichkhun urges fans to help children in South Sudan who are in urgent need of assistance.

Nichkhun Horvejkul, a member of 2PM boy band and beloved Thai idol, has worked with UNICEF Thailand for three consecutive years. We caught up with Nichkhun while he was recently spotted filming a commercial for UNICEF’s new campaign to help children in South Sudan who suffered from nutrition crisis.

Q: Please tell us about the filming for UNICEF today.

Nichkhun: UNICEF’s new campaign aims to raise awareness of the critical situation in South Sudan. Children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition. We are living comfortably and we barely know what children in other parts of the world are encountering. We should help them and UNICEF is providing emergency supplies. I have participated with UNICEF’s activities for many years and would like to continue to do so.

Q: How do you participate for the campaign?

Nichkhun: Today I filmed a commercial for the campaign to raise awareness on the issue. I have used social media such as twitter to promote UNICEF’s previous and current activities. If I have an opportunity, I would like to visit communities in Thailand where people's living conditions are deteriorating. Most probably I will visit communities in other provinces, not Bangkok.

Q: You have visited children in many communities. What’s your impression?

Nichkhun: I have visited such communities twice. The fact that those children did not show great pain from their hardship has impressed me the most. They seemed to be happy. They didn’t feel like they were inferior to us or lack anything.

Q: How do you feel to be a part of UNICEF?

Nichkhun: I am honored that UNICEF Thailand has chosen me. It's a great honor for me to be able to help children around the world with UNICEF for three consecutive years. I understand not every corner of the world is beautiful but I would like to spare children from suffering and pain. I don’t want them to grow up to become troubled adults. I hope every child receives equal rights, care, and enough food.

Q: Do you have any specific countries you want to help?

Nichkhun: I would like to help children affected by the crisis in Syria. We may be unable to go there and help Syrian children ourselves due to the escalating situation but I hope they are provided humanitarian assistance. I will continue to make a donation, help raise awareness, and give them my moral support.

Q: Have 2PM members done any activities to help children?

Nichkhun: My friends and I would like to establish a charitable foundation. We may call it 2PM Foundation. We would like to help orphans and people with disabilities, as well as students who need financial support. We have yet to decide when we will create the foundation because our schedules are packed. I think we will continue to work hard for the time being and spend our money on the foundation when the right time comes. I believe it is fortunate that the six of us have met and become friends and brothers. We would like to do good deeds together so we can meet again in our next lives.

Q: Please give us an update on 2PM’s activities in 2015.

Nichkhun: At the moment we have about 200 songs and we will choose the best songs for the upcoming Korean album. Each member has participated in composing songs among the aforementioned 200. During song selection process, we will not reveal the composer names. We will consider and choose songs that are most suitable for the album. For Japan, we are preparing for 14 rounds of 2015 Arena Tour in 6-7 cities. I am not sure whether we will have a chance to hold a concert in Thailand this year.

Q: Have you composed many songs?

Nichkhun: I am not talented like my friends. If my song is included in the upcoming album, it will be a ballad. I can’t compose hip-hop songs like my friends. I am not that good. (laugh)

Q: Are you under pressure since 2PM’s previous albums have received great feedback?

Nichkhun: Of course I am concerned about the response of this new album. Our previous ones have received enthusiastic response from our fans. I understand our fans have high expectations of this album. We will do our best.

Q: What about your solo activities?

Nichkhun: I have appeared as a guest in a Thai film called Chalui. I hope everyone likes it. The episodes of ‘Yes Sir My Boss’ sitcom that I have starred in should be broadcast soon. Please look forward to it.

Q: You are an inspiration for Thais who want to become famous idols in South Korea. Can you give any advice for teenagers who regard you as their idol?

Nichkhun: You should do what you are good at. You may watch your beloved idols on stage and want to become an entertainer like them. But you may realize later that you do not want to follow your idol’s path. Everyone has a different life. I think it is best if you choose your idol’s positive attitudes and character traits and adapt them to your life.

Q: Have you given any advice to GOT7’s Bambam?

Nichkhun: Sometimes he sent messages to ask me for an advice. I try to take care of him like my younger brother because we are both from Thailand. If possible, I want to help and support him to achieve his dreams to the fullest extent.

Q: You look like you are in love.

Nichkhun: I love my parents, my family and my fans. (smile)

Q: Please leave a message for your fans.

Nichkhun: I would like to encourage my fans to participate in UNICEF’s new campaign. Children in South Sudan are in urgent need for clean water and food. I hope everyone will make a donation for this campaign. You can help children there by donating only 100 Baht. Doing good deeds will make you happy. I hope my Hottests who always love and support me will make a donation. Then we can meet again in our next lives. (smile) I hope everyone is healthy and happy and I hope we will meet soon.
