Never judge a book by its cover. Easy enough to understand, right? Melody was one of those people to be taken into consideration under this quote. To the public eye, she had it all: the brains, the beauty, and even the wealth. There weren't very many boys her age who didn't have their eye on her, and as for the girls, they'd be lying if they said they weren't envious. Surely someone like Melody should have the biggest ego and be incredibly prideful in herself? That was quite the opposite of this one.

Young in her years, as a child, she remembered being happy; as happy as a child could have been with all she was blessed with. Although her family spent the majority of their time working, her older sister was the one who kept her preoccupied to pass the time. She could recall them running down to the lake and returning all covered in mud, only to hear their parents screaming about it later. She remembered her sister staying up late on nights that she knew she was absolutely restful, reading her a book or telling a bedtime story until she fell asleep. She was truly, completely, wonderfully happy, and in her mind, nothing could bring her down. That is, until that dreadful night.

Living in the District Six, known for its transportation, it was a given that their family with such riches owned their own vehicle; a nice one, at that. It was late one night, not a cloud in the darkened sky as they drove along the dirt path home. Melody and her sister, Amya, had begged their parents to take them out to a friend's earlier that day, only to have to come get them later to head home for the night. She remembered the sweet sound of music clinging to the atmosphere, laughter, and even squeals and screams when her sister and her were play-fighting in the back seat of the car. In the moment, their father had taken his eyes off from the road, trying to get them to calm down, but just that one second ruined everything. That one moment would change their lives forever in more ways than they knew. He tried to save them, to regain control of the car, but it was no use. And the last thing Melody remembered that night were the sounds of frightened scream and then nothingness. Her vision had went black.

That was the night she had lost her sister. By one careless decision, her family's lives and her own had changed forever in a flash. Flash forward to the present, her parents still spend every waking moment invested in their jobs, working to pay for all they had invested in previously. But truth be told, Melody knew the real reason behind it; they were trying to keep their minds occupied and they were trying to keep away from Melody. They blamed her for the death of her sister. Hell, even she blamed herself for it; letting the memory eat away at her heart and mind every waking moment, which is why she started the lifestyle up that she did. Even if it only lasted for a period of time, at least for a while she could numb the heartache, the hate she felt towards herself and toward her family, and even the anger she felt toward her sister for leaving her behind. At least she could feel relatively normal and she could forget, even if just for a little while. Still judging that book by its cover?
