Queen live at the Zenith : great tribute to Mercury thanks to Adam Lambert's creativity.
Monday night, Queen was playing the Zenith's stage with a special guest : Adam Lambert. Some news that didn't make everyone happy among the fans of Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991. Our colleague, Laura Bruneau went to the concert. According to her, the purists can be reassured : Lambert doesn't take Mercury's place.
Due to my young age, I obviously wasn't able to see live the original Queen with Freddie Mercury. But I know their work and I was curious to see them with Adam Lambert.
I knew Adam Lambert thanks to his single "Whataya Want From Me" released in 2009, and, even back then, I thought he had a beautiful voice.
Not everyone can sing Queen. The group's repertoire isn't for everybody. Playing "Sing It" on the Wii, I butcher every time "Under Pressure" and "Another One Bites the Dust".
The purists will say that nobody can replace Freddie Mercury. Certainly. But Adam Lambert pays tribute more than trying to take his place.
And when he sings some Queen, he rocks. He killed all the songs. And when Brian May introduced him to the audience, he had already won unanimous support.
Not only is he making the show visually, Adam Lambert kills it vocally. On the beautiful "Under Pressure" or a capella for the start of "Save Me".
There's something pure in his voice, that you can hear perfectly in "Who Wants to Live Forever".
On Monday night, Freddie's shadow lingered over the venue.
He was almost there, as at the end of "Bohemian Rhapsody", it wasn't Adam who was singing, but a video of Freddie Mercury singing which was played.
The medias said that Brian May and Roger Taylor, original Queen's guitarist and drummer, weren't as good as before on stage.
Despite not having any point of comparison, I think they can still hold their own quite well, especially during their solos.
Queen's rock didn't age at all. Old bands are still a safe bet.
On the applause meter, it's Brian May who wins all the audience's vote. He sang some songs alone, like "39" a country-like song filled with emotion. The song took the venue into a cosmic journey.
The instrumental "Lost Horizon" took us even further into the cosmos with a very futuristic atmosphere, thanks to the lights play, surely to reach Freddie in the stars.
Brian May also played his great and famous solo during "We Will Rock You", and it didn't lose its splendor at all.
Roger Taylor also plays his drums' solo and sang "A Kind of Magic". He was ok vocally, but his voice doesn't match Mercury's one. But it's a change to have a version sang by Taylor.
Adam Lambert, who sings with Queen since 2011, managed to develop a great complicity with the band, especially with Brian May. Apart from his voice, he's also a very flamboyant guy.
When he sings, he struts, he wiggles, sways his hips in a very sexy manner. Adam, his thing is to charm the audience. With each move, you want to go on stage to dance with him.
Like a diva, he has changed of outfit many times, wearing clothes more extravagant than the other. Leather or plaid pants, boots with golden heels or in snake's skin, Adam Lambert has an impressive look and he's comfortable in it.
And it reminds us a lot of a Freddie Mercury. Adam's body language is as wild as Mercury's was.
Majestic, the languid and suggestive poses came one after the other when he was seating on a couch while singing "Killer Queen". We wanted to go join him.
During the encore, everybody was standing in the seating area, when nobody got up during the show, except to give an ovation to Brian May.
The hits "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" were the perfect closing to the show, with a crowned Adam Lambert, paying more than a tribute to King Freddie.
Finally, a flamboyant show thanks to lights play and Adam Lambert's creativity, with good old songs like we love.
I would go back there anytime.
