Urgent Appeal !!!! Help Sea Shepherd to save the Walrus in Antarctica!
- Commentary from @CaptPaulWatson

What?

You think that there are no walrus in Antarctica! Well you must be wrong because Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt wants to provide funding to protect them.

Sea Shepherd has applied for some of this funding and with or with out the funding Sea Shepherd has determined that the Antarctic walrus must be protected because it must be extremely threatened, considering that so few have been sighted and reported, and not a single one has been filmed or photographed.

Having backed off from protecting the whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, the government of Australia seems to be worried about a species that actually does not and has never has existed in Antarctica.

“They might be able to provide funding for a specific type of research, whether it’s into the health of some of the marine life, the health of some of the on-ice extraordinary life, the walrus population, penguins.”
- Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt

After slashing the budget of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation CSIRO by $140 million Australian dollars, Greg Hunt is now promising (not actually giving) the CSIRO, the Australian Antarctic Division and the University of Tasmania a very “generous” combined gift of $25 million Australian dollars.

I would not be surprised if this “gift” is put off until after the next Australian Federal election so as to keep the carrot continuously on the stick. These scientists had better vote Liberal at the next election or it’s a no go on the 25 million Aussie clams.

Of course there will be no Antarctic climate change research, as 100% of that budget has been slashed so it is a mystery how Greg Hunt is going to protect the poor walrus from melting ice.

Sea Shepherd is reviewing plans to mount an expedition to Antarctica to locate the much diminished populations of Antarctic walrus.

If Greg Hunt says there are walrus in Antarctica there must be walrus in Antarctica because after all he is the Minister of the Environment and as we all know Tony Abbott’s government is the “suppository” of all wisdom and I’ve have a pretty good idea as to where Greg Hunt pulls his facts out of.

With this announcement the Japanese government immediately initiated exploratory research into scientific walrus hunting citing the need to replace dwindling supplies of elephant ivory with walrus ivory.

“Antarctica has the potential to make Japan self sufficient in ivory needs,” stated Japanese Environment Minister Odo Romata. “The walrus is a threatened species in the Northern Hemisphere so it will be wonderful if we can find a previously unexploited species in the Southern Hemisphere. After all, what we find in Antarctic waters is ours because we say so, and no one has the guts to stop us, especially our very good friend Abbott-san.”

Sea Shepherd is however at a lost to know where to begin the search for the elusive walrus. The data available to Greg Hunt appears to be a closely guarded highly classified state secret and there are fears that ISIL, or even worse, some homeless refugees may try to come ashore disguised as lost walruses.

“Nothing is beyond these Godless fiends,” said Prime Minister Abbott. “ISIS terrorists have been reported lurking near Antarctic research bases. I’m sending a detachment of the Australian Federal Police down there immediately to investigate, because the security of Australian mines and other corporate interests are at stake here.”

If Australia still had a Minister for Science the new species apparently discovered by Greg Hunt would be called Odobenus rosmarus Antarcticus

The last sighting of an Antarctic walrus was reported by an Australian Antarctic base dishwasher who may have been drunk or stoned because he also reported seeing the walruses arguing with some carpenters over what to do with the newly discovered Antarctic oysters.
